Pro-Parris Persister Rank and Percentile: 1690-1700 (Sample)

The economic condition of Salem Village's factions in 1700 can also be explored by examining changes in the standing of individual members over the previous decade. Similar to its earlier use, rank and percentile analysis can be applied to persisters who were assessed taxes in both 1690 and 1700 to determine their economic mobility.

Working either with the 1690 and 1700 tax data sets or with the 1690 and 1700 tax columns of the Tax Comparison Data Set, establish the rank and percentile standing of taxpayers for both years. Apply the "Autofilter" to select only "Pro-P" or "Anti-P" taxpayers and identify only those who paid taxes in both 1690 and 1700 (e.g., apply a "Custom Filter" to both the "1690 Rank" and "1695 Rank" columns: select "is greater than or equal to" in first field and select the lowest number in second field button to yield a list of only those who paid taxes in both years.)

Twenty-five signers of the 1695 pro-Parris petition paid taxes in both 1690 and 1700. Percentile changes of 10% or more in each person's standing are recorded in an adjacent column ("10% Change") as "Up," "Down," or "No Change."
